How to Watch the Champions Cup and Premiership Rugby Abroad in 2026/27

Europe's club rugby is back. The Champions Cup opens on the weekend of 16 to 18 October and returns for round two on 11 to 13 December, with two more pool rounds in January. The Premiership has been under way since the end of September.

If you follow Leicester, Saracens, Glasgow or Leinster from a flat in Lisbon or a house in the Dordogne, you'll know the problem already. The rugby is on two different UK services this season, and neither of them plays on a foreign connection. Here's where it all is, why it stops, and the one setup that keeps both on.

Where Club Rugby Is on UK TV This Season

The Champions Cup is on Premier Sports. It holds the UK and Ireland rights through the 2026/27 season and shows all 63 matches live, plus some Challenge Cup games each round and all of them from the quarter-finals on. If your team plays in the United Rugby Championship, that's on Premier Sports too, every fixture of it.

The Premiership is on TNT Sports, which since the spring has lived inside the HBO Max app rather than a standalone one. ITV picks out seven games a season to show live, the final among them, on ITV and ITVX.

So a Premiership fan who also follows their club into Europe is paying for two services, and both are built for a UK household. One note for Ireland: Premier Sports sells there in its own right, so on an Irish connection the Champions Cup needs nothing from us. This guide is for everyone watching from somewhere else.

The Champions Cup Calendar for 2026/27

The tournament runs in blocks rather than week by week, which matters when you're planning around a delivery:

  • Pool round 1 — 16 to 18 October 2026
  • Pool round 2 — 11 to 13 December 2026
  • Pool rounds 3 and 4 — 8 to 10 and 15 to 17 January 2027
  • Round of 16 and quarter-finals — the first two weekends of April 2027
  • Semi-finals — 30 April to 2 May 2027
  • The final — Saturday 22 May 2027, OL Stadium, Lyon

That gap between October and December is the useful bit. Miss the opening round and you've missed one pool weekend of four. The pool stage really takes shape over the winter, when the back-to-back January weekends settle who goes through.

Why Premier Sports and HBO Max Both Go Dark Abroad

Neither service is checking your account. They're checking where your connection appears to be. Open Premier Sports or HBO Max on a Spanish or French broadband line and the app sees a foreign address. That's the end of it, however long you've been a subscriber.

It's the same rule every UK sports broadcaster follows, because the rights they buy stop at the border. Your login is fine. The address is the problem.

Why a VPN App Won't Get You Through a Season

A VPN app gets most people through the first weekend, which is exactly why it's so frustrating when it stops. Consumer VPNs put thousands of customers on the same shared data-centre servers, and those address ranges are the first thing UK streaming services block. The app says it's connected; the match won't load.

Over a season that runs from October to May, that'll happen more than once. We've written up why ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark keep getting blocked on UK streaming, and nothing about the mechanics changes for rugby.

The Fix Is a UK Home Address

What Premier Sports and HBO Max accept without a second look is a UK residential IP: the kind of address a British broadband provider gives an ordinary house. To both services you're simply a subscriber at home.

A pre-configured SmartHub VPN router puts the whole household on that address at once. The television, the streaming stick, the tablet and your phone all sit behind it, so there's no app to start before kick-off and nothing to fiddle with when the Champions Cup on Saturday becomes the Premiership on Sunday.

Getting the Rugby on the Big Screen

Premier Sports has its own app for Fire TV and Android TV, so a Fire TV Stick behind the router is the quickest way to the television. Prefer fewer apps? Take Premier Sports as a Prime Video Channel instead and it sits inside the Prime Video app, which comes on both the Freely boxes we supply.

For the Premiership, our guide to TNT Sports on HBO Max abroad covers the app and the devices, and the ITV games come through ITVX on the same connection. If league is your code too, the Rugby League World Cup on Premier Sports runs from 15 October to 15 November.

Order in Time for December

Order this week and UPS Express has you set up well before round two on 11 to 13 December, with the January rounds and the spring knockouts all ahead of you. A router ordered today may still make the opening round on 16 to 18 October, but don't count on it.

Everything arrives pre-configured. Orders abroad go by UPS Express, usually one to three working days to Europe. UK orders ship with DPD, next-day after dispatch, if you'd rather pack it before you go. Plug it into your broadband abroad, connect the television, and sign in as you always have.

Watching Club Rugby Abroad: FAQs

Is the Champions Cup on TV in the UK?

Yes, on Premier Sports. It holds the UK and Ireland rights through the 2026/27 season and shows all 63 Champions Cup matches live, from the pool rounds to the final in Lyon on Saturday 22 May 2027. You need a Premier Sports subscription, taken direct, as a Prime Video Channel, or through Sky or Virgin Media.

Can I watch the Champions Cup abroad?

Not on an ordinary foreign connection. Premier Sports is licensed for the UK and Ireland and checks where your connection comes from before it streams. A router with a UK residential IP makes your connection look like a UK home, so your own Premier Sports login plays abroad as it does at home.

Where is Premiership rugby on TV in 2026/27?

Most Premiership matches are on TNT Sports, which now streams through the HBO Max app, and ITV shows seven games live, including the final. Both check where you're connecting from, so abroad they need the same UK connection as Premier Sports.

Does a VPN app work for watching rugby abroad?

Rarely for long. VPN apps send everyone through shared data-centre addresses that UK broadcasters recognise and block, so a stream that works on Friday night can fail on Saturday afternoon. A UK residential IP is an ordinary home-broadband address, so Premier Sports, HBO Max and ITVX treat you as a normal viewer.

Final Thoughts

Club rugby asks more of an expat than most sport. Two services, two apps and eight months of fixtures from October to May, with the best weekends in the depths of winter, when you're least likely to be flying home for them.

Keep both subscriptions, and give them a connection that looks like it's in Britain. A pre-configured VPN router on a UK residential IP does that once for every screen, and it'll still be there when the Six Nations comes round in February.
