How to Watch EastEnders Abroad on BBC iPlayer

For plenty of British households, EastEnders is the fixed point of the evening. Half seven, four nights a week, and those drums at the end. Then you move to Spain or France, open BBC iPlayer, and it tells you it only works in the UK.

Walford doesn't wait for anyone, least of all this winter. Here's how to keep watching from wherever you've settled, live in the evening or on iPlayer the morning it airs.

Half Seven in Walford: What Time Is That Where You Are?

EastEnders goes out on BBC One at 7.30pm UK time, Monday to Thursday. That's 8.30pm in mainland Spain, France and Italy, 9.30pm in Cyprus and Greece, and 7.30pm on the dot in Portugal and the Canaries. The clocks change on the same weekends across Europe, so the gap holds all year.

You don't have to wait for the evening, either. Each episode usually lands on BBC iPlayer at 6am on the day it airs, which is 7am in Spain, early enough to watch over breakfast. And on Sunday evenings BBC Three repeats the week's episodes back to back.

A Year in the Making: New Year's Day 2027

On New Year's Day 2026, EastEnders set a whole episode a year ahead, on New Year's Day 2027, with Max Branning at the centre of it. The BBC called it the first entire flash-forward episode in the show's history.

The storylines since have been building towards that day, and Walford is now closing in on it. It's the stretch of the year you'd least want to miss, and it runs straight through Christmas, when the Square is rarely quiet. Our guide to UK Christmas TV abroad covers the rest of the festive line-up.

Why BBC iPlayer Shuts the Door Abroad

iPlayer checks the IP address your connection presents before it plays anything. On a Spanish or French line the answer comes back that BBC iPlayer only works in the UK, however long you've had the account and however British the sofa.

It isn't one device being awkward. Every screen in the house shares that connection, so the television, the tablet and the phone all look as if they're abroad, because they are. Your iPlayer account is still yours. It's the address it arrives from that iPlayer won't accept.

Why a VPN App Works on Monday and Not by Thursday

Most people try a VPN app first, and for an episode or two it can work. Then one evening it doesn't. The big VPN brands route thousands of customers through shared servers in commercial data centres, and iPlayer blocks those addresses in batches. Hop to another UK server and you're usually on the next address down the same list.

With a soap on four nights a week, that adds up to a lot of evenings spent switching servers instead of watching. If you've already paid for a VPN app and watched it fail, our guide to why ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark stop working on iPlayer explains what's going on.

The Fix: One UK Address for the Whole House

iPlayer is built for an ordinary British home, so the answer is to give it one. A pre-configured SmartHub VPN router connects through a UK residential IP, an address from a real British broadband line rather than a data-centre server. There's nothing on a blocklist to catch, so iPlayer simply plays the episode.

Because the VPN runs on the router, every device behind it is covered at once: the smart TV, a Fire TV Stick, the iPad in the kitchen. Nobody has to open an app or remember to switch anything on before EastEnders starts.

The router doesn't unlock anything you don't already have, either. It only changes what your connection looks like, so your own iPlayer account works the way it did at home. Our guide to choosing a SmartHub router compares the four models.

Back on the Telly With a Freely Box

EastEnders is a sofa programme, not a phone one. A Freely box behind the router puts BBC One back in a proper TV guide, so you can watch it live, restart it if the phone goes, or pick up last night's episode from iPlayer in the same place.

Both boxes we supply, the Netgem PLEIO and the Manhattan Aero, come with the main UK players already installed, so there's no app store to wrestle with before the first episode.

Freely is also due to get an EastEnders channel of its own before the end of the year: a subscription-free UKTV one replaying Walford's mid-2000s storylines. New episodes stay on BBC One and iPlayer.

If you've been watching on a satellite dish pointed back at the UK, now is a good moment to look at the alternative. BBC Three, home of the Sunday catch-up, closes as a TV channel next spring, and our guide to switching from Freesat to Freely explains why more of the BBC is heading online.

Set Up Before the Run-In to New Year

Order now and UPS Express, which usually reaches Europe in one to three working days, should have the router with you and tested well before Christmas. Or have it sent to a UK address with DPD, normally next day after dispatch, and bring it out with you on your next trip.

It arrives pre-configured. Plug it into your internet abroad, connect the television or Freely box, and open iPlayer as you would at home. The same setup carries Strictly Come Dancing on a Saturday night, The Traitors when it returns in 2027, and everything else on iPlayer in between.

Watching EastEnders Abroad: FAQs

Can I watch EastEnders abroad?

Yes, but not on an ordinary foreign connection. EastEnders is on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Before iPlayer plays anything it checks your IP address, so from outside the UK it refuses. A VPN router with a UK residential IP gives your connection a British home address, and iPlayer plays every episode just as it did in the UK.

What time is EastEnders on, and when is it on iPlayer?

EastEnders is on BBC One at 7.30pm UK time, Monday to Thursday, which is 8.30pm in mainland Spain, France and Italy and 7.30pm in Portugal. Each episode usually goes up on BBC iPlayer at 6am on the day it airs.

Can I watch EastEnders live, not just on catch-up?

Yes. Behind a router with a UK residential IP, BBC One's live stream plays in iPlayer, and a Freely box shows BBC One in its TV guide alongside the other UK channels, so you can watch at half seven with everyone back home.

Do I need a VPN app on my TV?

No. The VPN runs on the router, so a TV, Freely box or streaming stick plugged in behind it needs nothing installed. That matters on Samsung and LG TVs in particular, which have no VPN apps at all.

Final Thoughts

EastEnders has been part of the evening for decades. Living abroad shouldn't mean hearing what happened in the Vic second-hand.

A VPN router on a UK residential IP puts EastEnders back on your own television and every other screen in the house, four nights a week, all year round.
