Motorhome and campervan travel across Europe has become increasingly popular in recent years. Many travellers now spend weeks or months exploring countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Germany.
At the same time, internet connectivity on the road has improved dramatically. Most motorhomes now rely on one of two internet options:
Both provide reliable connectivity across much of Europe. However, when it comes to watching UK television services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Freely, many travellers quickly discover that streaming stops working once they leave the UK.
The good news is that with the right setup, watching UK TV from a motorhome anywhere in Europe is entirely possible.
Yes, it is possible to watch BBC iPlayer in a motorhome while travelling across Europe, but only if your internet connection appears to come from the UK.
Streaming services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 check your IP address to determine your location. If your connection appears to originate from Spain, France, Portugal or any other country outside the UK, access will be blocked automatically.
This applies even if:
Because of this, travellers need a way for their internet connection to appear as though it is coming from the UK.
Most motorhome travellers now rely on either Starlink or a mobile data router.
Starlink
Starlink has become extremely popular with motorhome and campervan owners because it works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky. It provides reliable broadband speeds across most of Europe and works well even in remote areas.
4G and 5G mobile routers
Many travellers instead use a mobile data router with a SIM card. These routers connect to local cellular networks and create a Wi-Fi network inside the motorhome.
Both solutions provide excellent connectivity for everyday internet use. The only challenge is that streaming platforms will detect that the connection is outside the UK.
The simplest way to solve this problem is by adding a VPN router that connects through a UK residential IP address.
Once connected, every device inside the motorhome appears to be using a normal UK internet connection.
This means streaming services such as:
will work normally, even when you are travelling abroad.
Instead of installing VPN apps on each device, the router handles the connection for the entire network.
The best way to connect any VPN router, is by Ethernet cable to your Starlink or 4G/5G router. However, some modern 4G and 5G routers only provide Wi-Fi and do not include Ethernet ports.
Fortunately this is not a problem.
All of our SmartHub VPN routers support Wi-Fi repeater mode, which allows the router to connect wirelessly to your existing internet connection. This could be a Starlink router, a 4G or 5G hotspot, or even campsite Wi-Fi.
The VPN router then creates its own Wi-Fi network inside the motorhome. Devices connected to this network are automatically routed through the UK residential VPN connection.
In practice, the setup is simple.
Your Starlink or mobile router provides the internet connection. The VPN router then connects to that network either through Ethernet or Wi-Fi repeater mode.
Your devices connect to the VPN router rather than directly to the original internet connection.
Typical devices include:
Because all traffic passes through the VPN router first, streaming services see a UK residential IP address instead of the local European connection.
Freely is a new platform that delivers free-to-air UK television entirely over the internet.
It provides live BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 channels alongside catch-up services and on-demand programmes.
For motorhome travellers, this means it is now possible to watch UK television without needing a satellite dish or aerial installation.
Example Freely devices include:
When used with a VPN router and a UK residential IP connection, Freely works abroad just as it does in the UK.
The same setup also works well for campervans, caravans and touring vans travelling across Europe.
As long as you have an internet connection through Starlink, 4G or 5G, a compact VPN router can provide a UK residential IP connection for streaming.
Because the router handles the connection for the entire network, you only need to configure it once. Every device in the vehicle can then access UK streaming apps as if it were connected to a home broadband line in the UK.
Powering networking equipment in a motorhome is usually straightforward.
Many vehicles use a 240V inverter, allowing equipment to be powered using normal UK plug sockets.
Others prefer running equipment directly from the 12V leisure battery.
For motorhome and campervan travellers, compact equipment and flexible power options are important. Several of our routers can work in this type of setup depending on how your vehicle’s electrical system is configured.
SmartHub Travel
For most motorhome users, the SmartHub Travel router makes the most sense. It is compact and designed specifically for portable internet setups such as Starlink and 4G or 5G routers.
The router uses a 5V USB-C power connection, which makes it easy to run from a motorhome electrical system.
Because most motorhomes provide 12V power, you will need a 12V to 5V step-down converter to power the router safely.
SmartHub Travel does not include over-voltage protection, so it should not be connected directly to 12V power.

The SmartHub Travel can also be powered using its supplied adapter from a standard Type G UK socket, which is useful when a 240V inverter is available.
Once powered, the router can connect to your Starlink or mobile router using either an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi repeater mode, providing a UK residential VPN connection for all devices inside the vehicle.
SmartHub Home
The SmartHub Home router can also work well in a motorhome if a 240V inverter with UK sockets is available or from a 12V system.
This router uses a 12V barrel power connector, which means it is also possible to power it directly from a 12V system using an appropriate adapter.

The SmartHub Home is slightly larger than the SmartHub Travel model and includes larger Wi-Fi antennas, which can be useful when connecting to wider campsite Wi-Fi networks.
It works well in motorhomes where space is not the primary concern and the router can remain installed more permanently.
SmartHub Pro
The SmartHub Pro router is generally more than most motorhome travellers require. It is designed for larger home networks and higher-capacity installations.
While it would still function in a motorhome environment, the additional capabilities are usually unnecessary for a typical travelling setup where only a small number of devices are connected.
For most motorhome and campervan users, the SmartHub Travel remains the most practical and flexible option.
Modern internet technologies such as Starlink and 5G have made it much easier to stay connected while travelling across Europe in a motorhome.
However, streaming UK television abroad still requires the right network setup.
By adding a compact VPN router that connects through your existing internet connection, you can watch UK TV on the road just as easily as you would at home.
Whether you are parked in the Algarve, travelling through France or exploring the Spanish coast, your favourite UK programmes can travel with you.
