Go looking for a VPN in the LG Content Store and you’ll come up empty — there isn’t one to install. Yet a UK connection is exactly what you need to watch BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and NOW on an LG TV once you’re outside Britain.
You can’t put a VPN app on an LG smart TV — but you don’t need to. Rather than changing the TV, you change the connection it uses, and the most dependable way to do that is a router that gives you a UK residential IP. Here’s why the app route is a dead end, and how to get UK TV working on your LG instead.
LG smart TVs run webOS, LG’s own operating system. Like most smart-TV platforms, webOS doesn’t support VPN apps — there’s no VPN in the LG Content Store, and no hidden VPN setting in the network menu either. There’s simply no way to install one on the TV itself.
So when you open BBC iPlayer, ITVX or Channel 4 abroad, the app checks your IP address, sees you’re outside the UK, and blocks you. 1. Connect through a VPN router (most reliable). A VPN router sits between your LG TV and the internet and routes the whole connection through the UK. The TV — and everything else on the network — is treated as an ordinary UK home, with nothing to install or change on the TV itself. It’s the closest thing to plug-and-play, and the method that most comfortably handles HD streaming to a big screen.
2. Smart DNS. Smart DNS changes the DNS entries in your TV’s network settings to spoof your region for streaming. It’s reasonably easy to set up, but it doesn’t encrypt your connection, only works with the services it specifically supports, and is increasingly detected and blocked by broadcasters such as BBC iPlayer and ITVX.
3. Share a VPN from a computer. You can run a VPN on a Windows PC or Mac, turn it into a “virtual router”, and connect your LG TV to that. It works, but it’s fiddly, ties up a computer that has to stay switched on, and tends to drop out mid-stream.
4. A VPN travel hotspot. Some travel routers and phones can share a VPN connection over Wi-Fi. It’s portable, but performance for TV streaming is usually poor, it drains a phone battery quickly, and cheaper devices tend to get blocked before long.
One thing an LG can’t fall back on is Freely. The free UK streaming platform is built into certain Hisense, Bush, TCL, Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba sets — but not LG (or Samsung) — so there’s no Freely app route on an LG. That leaves methods 2–4 as the only alternatives to a router, and none is as steady for watching UK TV on a television.
